How Does it Compare to ‘In-Chair’ Whitening

An alternative to home whitening kits is to visit a dental clinic and have the procedure performed with a dental professional. This procedure may take between 2 and 3 hours. The procedure is highly effective however in some minor cases, the procedure can leave your teeth very sensitive for a short period of time. While we also can do this at Aria Dental, we rarely offer this option as we find that take-home teeth-whitening is usually more cost effective & convenient for the patient.

Our professional take-home kits are fast acting, taking just 1-2 weeks and a lower risk of tooth sensitivity. Plus, we find that the benefits last longer than in-chair whitening, and only require occasional maintenance sessions down the track.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

There are a multitude of teeth whitening products on the market, but they’re not all the same. The over-the-counter formulations or ones in ‘whitening toothpaste’, are far weaker than Aria Dental’s professionally prescribed product.

When we apply whitening product to the tooth, it breaks down into water and oxygen ions. The oxygen ions enter the tooth enamel, attacking the long stain molecules, breaking them down into shorter molecules that are colourless. These molecules are then naturally removed from your tooth by saliva.

Teeth whitening kits can come in various strengths, with the more intense consisting of a high number of oxygen ions.

What to Know Before Selecting a Tooth Whitening Kit?

What chemical ingredients are in the kit? Are they safe?

The short answer is yes they are but it is important to know what you are putting in your mouth. Some retail whitening kits use a combination of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and sodium chlorite. Where dentists use hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide which are more effective. If you are looking to purchase a whitening kit on line, keep the concentration of hydrogen or carbamide peroxide to less than 10% to minimise sensitivity and damage to the gums. Concentration higher than this will need a customised well fitting bleach tray that doesn’t cover the gums.

How much active ingredient is in the kit?

Most retail teeth whitening kits only contain 8% of the active ingredient. As a comparison, whitening toothpastes contain 2%. Our Aria Dental home whitening kits are stronger, containing around 16% carbamide peroxide. In Australia, only dentists can legally obtain and use higher concentrated bleaching agents for in chair treatments which contain around 30% of the active ingredient. This high strength used in for in chair treatments can often make your teeth and gums sensitive after use for approximately 48 hours. It sensitivity can be controlled with anti-inflammatories.

How well do the trays fit?

Our dentists at Aria Dental will make you a custom set of trays, after a 3D digital scan. You will receive a separate top & a separate bottom tray; you can wear together or just one. Your tray will be totally moulded to your teeth and stop at the gum line. This ensures that the solution gel gets placed evenly across the surfaces of your teeth and none touching your gums. Online kits use a mouldable mouthguard, that you shape yourself in hot water. These don’t allow for a smooth coverage, allows for gaps / parts to be or over bleach areas giving you’re a spotty finish.

What’s with the UV light?

Some dentist may use UV lamps in the clinic to help activate the solution treatment, reducing your time spent in their chair, but they will use special guards to protect other parts of your mouth, like your tongue & gums from the excessive UV exposure.

No. It won’t last forever! But it will definitely last for a very long time!

Teeth whitening kits generally take around 2-3 weeks to work and will keep your teeth whiter for a significant period of time. You can always reapply the whitening gel if you want to ‘top up’ the shade of your teeth. Although it is very hard to know just how long they will stay whiter for, the consenuse would be that it can last for several years. We are happy to provide you with additional whitening solution if you wish to apply more. Keep your customised trays safe so you can reuse them.

If you are looking for a more than ‘white teeth’ solution and if you want to restore the natural contours and shape of your teeth , you are best to learn more about the different options of dental veneers at Aria Dental. Boutique teeth whitening before and after

Is Teeth Whitening for Me?

It is quite a simple question….. If you think your teeth shade is too dark and if you think you would like them to be whiter then of course whitening is for you! You can make an appointment at any of our clinics, Maddington, North Perth or Midland for an appointment.

Teeth whitening is an excellent solution to remove the following stains: Coffee or tea, Nicotine, Red wine, and natural discolouration of the enamel.

Some people have discolouration due to medical or genetic problems or due to the use of certain medications or ingesting high fluoride when the teeth are developing. These types of staining occur while your permanent teeth are still forming. The drug becomes calcified in the tooth, creating deep, dark stains which are mottled or striped. These stains are embedded in the tooth enamel and inner layers and are best treated by veneers or cosmetic bonding.

Frequently asked question

How many shades lighter will my teeth become?

After a course of at-home teeth-whitening, your teeth will become approximately two to three shades lighter over a two to four-week period. This may not mean much to the you but in real terms the outcome essentially means they ‘will be noticeably more whiter’

Will my teeth look unnaturally white?

No, your teeth will still natural because they are natural. There is no such thing as unnaturally white 😊

Do I have to see a dentist before purchasing a teeth whitening kit?

If you want a professional dental strength solution for your teeth whitening Perth kit – then Yes, you do have to see a dentist before you can purchase a pro teeth-whitening kit as you have to be assessed and orally healthy to have a higher strength teeth-whitening treatment. It be better to make sure your teeth are professionally cleaned before you whiten the teeth and to check you don’t have any decay or gum disease which can affect the results. Customising the dental trays, a similar process as a custom mouthguard, is a critical step to achieve the best results from your whitening program.

How much will my at-home teeth whitening kit cost?

The cost of an at-home teeth-whitening kit starts at approximately $250*. However, you will need to have an exam, scale and clean before starting treatment. If you have health insurance, some funds will give you a rebate towards this treatment. However, this depends on which health fund you’re with and what level of cover you have. To find out if you are eligible, please call the clinic for any appropriate health insurance tem numbers, then check with your health fund to determine exactly how much it will cost you.

Will the whitening solution hurt my teeth?

Your dentist will prescribe the correct strength tooth bleach for you so that you won’t damage your teeth or experience any pain. Also, our teeth-whitening product has special desensitising ingredients that block and calm the nerves, further ensuring there will be little to no discomfort. In the event that there is sensitivity we are happy to prescribe you medications to alleviate any discomfort.

How long will it take to get results from my teeth whitening?

With take-home teeth-whitening, you should see results within two to four weeks.

Will I have to repeat my teeth whitening Perth procedure?

We recommend that you repeat your course of whitening in the future, as it is likely that your teeth will continue to stain due to everyday eating and drinking, particularly if you drink a lot of tea or coffee, or smoke cigarettes.

Will my veneers also change colour?

No. Anything artificial such as veneers, composite bonding, white fillingsdental crowns or any replacement teeth will not change colour and are not suitable for teeth-whitening.

If you have any of these products or prosthetic devices, speak to your dentist about alternative options.
