There are various forms of sleep dentistry / sedation available to facilitate your dental treatment including oral anti-anxiolytic medication, IV sedation or general anaesthetic sedation. Your dental team will discuss the advantages of each option and assist in recommending the most suitable form of sedation for you.
At Aria Dental, we are able to use a variety of sedative medications to relax our patients and allow the dentist to perform the necessary dental treatments. The medications can be administered in a number of ways to make you feel sleepy and relaxed.
With all forms of sedation, you will still receive a local anaesthetic for your treatment. However, as you are sedated, you are unlikely to feel any discomfort at all from the injections. Even without sedation, the delivery of a local anaesthetic is now virtually painless. An anaesthetic cream may also be used so that you do not even feel the needle.
Lignocaine is the most common local anaesthetic used in dentistry; however, there are many others. Local anaesthetics are now much more effective compared to previous anaesthetics, as they are combined with other medications to localise the effect and make it work faster and last longer. The anaesthetic usually lasts several hours but wears off over time.
After your treatment, you will be taken to our recovery area to be monitored. The time spent in the recovery area will depend on your individual needs, the type of sedation you were administered, and the procedure you underwent.
Once you have met the criteria for discharge, the nursing staff will provide you with verbal and written post-operative instructions. We advise that a responsible adult be with you during these discussions, as they will also need to accompany you home and stay with you for the remainder of the day.
