Dental Crowns

Safely restoring strength, durability & aesthetics to your tooth

A dental crown is a cap that covers your tooth. A crown completely encloses the visible part of your tooth above the gum line, and allows you to keep a badly damaged or unsightly tooth rather than having it extracted.

At Aria Dental, we offer many types of tooth crowns, depending on your needs, wants and the location requiring the crown.

What are dental crowns used for?

Put simply, dental crowns (aka dental caps) can help you keep your teeth for longer. They are often used when more than 50% of the tooth has been damaged through any number of reasons. For example, they can be used:

  • To cover an unsightly or badly stained tooth
If a tooth is in a visible position and is badly stained all over, a dental crown can provide a more natural-looking, attractive appearance in keeping with its neighbouring teeth.
  • To replace a large filling
If you have a large filling or several fillings in one tooth, there is a danger of the tooth fracturing. Repeated filling replacements on the same tooth can lead to further tooth damage. To avoid these ongoing problems and potential tooth weakening, your dentist may suggest a dental crown to cover and support the tooth.
  • With dental implants
If you’ve lost one natural tooth and your dentist has given you a dental implant, it will require a crown, attached via an abutment, to act as the new replacement tooth.
  • To cover a badly cracked tooth or stop it from fracturing
If you have badly cracked your tooth, it will weaken and be vulnerable to more damage. A dental crown can hold the tooth in place, allowing you to keep the tooth for longer.
  • After root canal treatment
Root canal treatment can often weaken a tooth as the tooth has been hollowed out. A crown is often recommended following root canal therapy to protect it from fracture and further infection. A crown also has the added cosmetic benefit, especially as root canal-treated teeth can often turn a greyish colour.

Types of dental crowns

Aria Dental create a variety of dental crowns, but essentially, there are three types:

  • All-ceramic crowns: Often used for front teeth in high aesthetic zones – when they are often seen when you smile or talk.
  • Porcelain bonded to metal crowns: (aka PBM or PFMs – porcelain fused to metal) These crowns are strong and used for back teeth, and sometimes front teeth. However, anterior teeth will usually have an all-ceramic crown.
  • Gold crowns: these are usually used for rear teeth only however, can be used at the front if a patient has a personal preference for gold. Gold crowns are not commonly used now, but are still an excellent option, and also have the benefit of being strong. They also require less tooth preparation (meaning: they can be thinner, so less of the natural tooth has to be filed back).
