Fixed bridge vs. Implant-supported Dentures

Discover the difference between the two main options for all teeth replacement.

Implant-supported fixed bridge

The implant-supported fixed denture or bridge is anchored to tiny screws (implants)  in your jawbone, via abutments, and can only be removed by your dental professional for maintenance if required.

The functionality and comfort experienced with an implant-supported fixed bridge are overwhelmingly greater than that of conventional removable dentures. A fixed bridge attached to implants is priced from $17,500, with a fixed full arch (upper and lower teeth) priced from $30,000 to $35,000 – approximately. Health rebates may apply.

Implant-supported removable denture

The implant-supported removable denture (overdenture) is retained in your mouth using precision attachments. It can be removed for cleaning or at any desired time. Implant dentures offer significant advantages over conventional dentures.

The functionality and comfort experienced with an implant-supported removable denture are overwhelmingly greater than that of conventional dentures. An implant-supported removable overdenture is priced from $13,000 to $15,000 (lower or upper), with a removable full arch (upper and lower teeth) priced from $26,000 to $30,000 – approximately. Health insurance rebates may apply.

Frequently asked questions

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium screw that is inserted into the jawbone, below the gum line. They act as an artificial tooth root, anchoring your new tooth replacement – or teeth.

What is the cost of a removable full arch support (teeth replacement) with implants?

The cost of a removable full arch support with implants starts from $13,000-$15,000 (lower or upper). The cost of a full arch support – upper and lower is approximately from between 26,000 and $30,000. However, this is an approximate price, and other issues may affect your overall cost. For an accurate quote, please book an appointment for a free consultation with our specialist prosthodontist.

How many tooth implants are required for a full mouth tooth replacement?

If you choose the All on 4 procedure, you may only need four dental implants.

Can I replace all my teeth?

Yes, if your teeth are badly damaged and need to be extracted and replaced, you can do so with either an implant-supported denture or fixed bridge. If preferred, you can have the Same Day Teeth procedure performed, where extractions, implant placement and the fitting of a prosthetic device are all completed within 24 hours.

Are there any negatives with dental implants?

There are not many negatives with dental implants. Cost may be prohibitive for some, as they are more expensive, initially, than conventional removable dentures. If implants are placed by a poorly trained and inexperienced practitioner, there is an increased likelihood that implant placement may fail or infection could develop.

What is the cost of a fixed full arch support (teeth replacement) with implants?

The cost of a fixed full arch support, permanently attached to dental implants, starts from $17,500. The cost of a fixed full arch support – upper and lower jaw – start from approximately $30,000 or $35,000. These prices are approximate though, and for an accurate quote we suggest you book a free consultation with our specialist prosthodontist, Dr Michael Zaninovich.

Why do some people need to have a bone graft?

Some people need to have a bone graft before their dental implant procedure as they don’t have adequate bone volume to hold the dental implant in place. A bone graft will add bone tissue to the area, increasing the chance of success with the implant procedure.

What is the best option to replace all teeth?

Dental implants are considered the best option to replace all missing teeth, providing you are in good health. Implants are considered superior to traditional removable dentures as they offer far greater stability, allowing you to eat well and function as if you had your natural teeth. Implants also help stimulate the jawbone, keeping it strong and avoiding resorption (bone loss).

Do dental implants hurt?

Surprisingly, it’s more painful having a tooth removed than having an implant place. Also, you’ll be given plenty of local anaesthetic, and if desired, you can receive sedation to further relax you.

Would a dentist be prepared to remove all my teeth?

As dentists, we always recommend you hold onto your teeth as long as possible. However, if they are badly decayed and you have severe gum disease, or there are other relevant reasons not to keep your teeth, extraction may be the best option. Ideally, your teeth will be replaced with dental implants and either a removable implant-supported denture or fixed bridge.

Do dental implants fail?

The failure rate for dental implants is approximately 5%.

How long do teeth implants last?

.If cared for properly, tooth implants can last a lifetime. However, there are no guarantees. You can increase your chances of your dental implant lasting a long time by practising good oral hygiene and adhering to regular dental checkups. Many dentists conservatively predict that implants will last at least 25 years.
